Every year on April 25, the world observes World Malaria Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the ongoing global fight against malaria. This year’s theme, “Malaria with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite“, encourages renewed and re-energized efforts and innovative solutions to accelerate progress toward malaria elimination.
Here in Singapore, malaria is not a major public health threat. In fact, Singapore has been officially certified as malaria-free by the World Health Organization (WHO) since 1982. However, the fight against mosquito-borne diseases is far from over.
Malaria is a vector-borne disease caused by a parasite transmitted through the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. While malaria is prevalent in many parts of the world, we cannot ignore the significant global progress in its prevention. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), malaria cases have drastically decreased thanks to efforts like the distribution of bed nets, spraying insecticides, and improving sanitation and healthcare systems.
However, even as global efforts continue to eliminate malaria, it’s crucial to remember that mosquitoes are not just carriers of malaria. They are also responsible for spreading dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and other dangerous diseases.
While malaria is not the top concern in Singapore, mosquitoes still pose a significant public health threat. The Aedes mosquito, known for transmitting dengue and Zika, is widespread in Singapore’s tropical climate, especially in urban areas.
As of April 12, 2025, 93 dengue cases were reported in the week ending on that date, 6 cases more than the previous week. In addition, 17 active dengue clusters were reported as of April 14, 2025, with 2 red alert clusters (clusters with 10 or more cases) in place.
